Course Overview

Our Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) 40 training was developed using various OSHA guidance documents along with real world experience.  (This course is referred to as OSHA 40, HAZWOPER 40 or 40 hour HAZWOPER).

In accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 regulations, specifically the 40 hour HAZWOPER training requirements, this course is mandatory for individuals intending to work within designated OSHA 40 HAZWOPER Work Sites. Upon successful conclusion of the course, participants will receive a certification recognized and accepted by regulatory authorities. Students have the flexibility to progress through the program at their preferred pace.

Throughout the course, participants will encounter self-assessment quizzes, interactive exercises, and a final exam, all of which are self-graded. The quizzes can be retaken as many times as necessary, while the final exam may be attempted a maximum of three times. Upon successful course completion, an electronic certificate will be promptly dispatched to the individual via email.

It's worth noting that the OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER Course is conducted online. As per regulatory requirements, employers must ensure that their employees receive training in accordance with performance-based standards for any relevant equipment, whether this training is delivered in a classroom or online setting.

Course Description

The 40-hour HAZWOPER training, mandated by OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.120 standard, is critical for those planning to work at designated HAZWOPER Sites. Participants who complete the course will receive a certificate of completion that is recognized by regulatory authorities. The course is designed to be interactive, enabling learners to progress at their own pace. To satisfy a portion of the certification requirements for the 40-hour HAZWOPER, a commitment to a minimum of 40 hours of study time is necessary.

Offered primarily online, this training can be completed regardless of whether it is conducted face-to-face or virtually. Under these regulations, employers must ensure their employees are properly trained on how to use the relevant equipment to meet performance standards, irrespective of the training mode. This is in line with the site-specific requirements of the 40-hour HAZWOPER, which typically are not addressed in generic public workshops or open registration courses. For example, general training on respirators or personal protective equipment (PPE) may not meet the particular regulations of a specific site.

Who is the 40-hour HAZWOPER training designed for?

It is intended for primary site workers, including equipment operators, general laborers, and supervisory personnel who are involved in cleaning up hazardous substances or who might encounter health risks and hazardous materials in their work. These individuals must complete at least 40 hours of off-site instruction and an additional minimum of three days of actual field experience under the supervision of a qualified and experienced supervisor.

States with OSHA-approved plans are required to implement standards that are at least as stringent as the federal 40-hour HAZWOPER training requirements. Moreover, these Plan States may also have additional training requirements that need to be met.

Course Lessons

To comply with OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.120 regulation, individuals involved in HAZWOPER operations must complete a 40 hour training course. The course is sometimes referred to as OSHA 40, HAZWOPER 40 or 40 hour HAZWOPER. This training is mandatory before a person begins work at a contaminated site. Our training has 25 modules along with a final exam. Each module contains knowledge checks throughout and a final module quiz at the end. Professional voiceovers, high resolution graphics and OSHA compliant content is presented in every module.

It is designed to provide certification upon successful completion. Upon completion, a certificate will be issued, and a copy stored in our database if needed in the future. It's important to note that while this course is comprehensive, additional site-specific training is required by OSHA for employers with certain hazardous substances and environments encountered at different sites. This requirement includes 3 days of site-specific training for new employees after completing the course. Furthermore, as with any training, whether it's conducted online or in a classroom, employers are obligated to train their employees on equipment performance-based standards.
